Many mistakenly believe that their vehicle warranty is only good when maintenance service is done by the manufacturer. Not only is that belief a myth, it is ILLEGAL for manufacturers to claim “tie in sales” – or, to tie their sales to a warranty. According to the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, manufacturers cannot mandate where their customers choose to get service work done. It is an infringement on one’s freedom to force consumers to buy services from the the manufacturer (the only exception being if manufacturers can PROVE they are the ONLY place that a particular service can be met properly).
